Nic Hofmeyr – Director of Photography

BIOGRAPHY

Nic’s fiction work includes the gritty reality of South African gangster/action film, JERUSALEMA, for which he won Best Cinematography at FESPACO, Burkino Faso in 2009 and the dark, noir’ish crime story HOW TO STEAL TWO MILLION, released in 2011, which won Best Film at the AMAA awards in Nigeria. In 2012 he photographed drama series ROOM 9, an occult cop show on SABC television. In 2014 Nic photographed three South African feature films, one of them, CUCKOLD, recently screening at Toronto and Chicago Film Festivals. In 2015 he photographed thirteen episodes of top-rated BBC children’s drama, JAMILLAH & ALADDIN.

His work in Feature Documentaries includes photographing MINER’S SHOT DOWN, the story of the Marikana massacre, which won the 2015 International Emmy award for Best Documentary. Nic photographed MANDELA THE MYTH AND ME which won Special Jury Prize at IDFA, the world’s largest doc film festival. Nic worked as a camera operator with Oscar winning Director/Cinematographer Daniel Junge, on IRON LADIES OF LIBERIA, a unique film chronicling the first year in office of Africa’s first democratically elected woman president.

His periodic work as a Director / DOP in the documentary genre includes his tribute to Johannesburg, MAIN REEF ROAD, broadcast by National Geographic amongst others, 2001’s A MINER’S TALE, part of the ground breaking STEPS FOR THE FUTURE project and 2005’s TAKING BACK THE WAVES, which has screened at many surf film festivals around the world.

Nic's diverse media career includes directing music videos, shooting tv news, taking documentary photographs and making occasional written contributions to publications such as Sunday Independent, Mail & Guardian and Screen Africa.
